• The Performance Debacle

Hi everyone, some of you may have noticed the lag, the stutters, the occasional full-on crash, the general technical difficulties. Aaaand you're definitely not imagining it.

This has followed me around on and off since my earliest series. Same trusty laptop, ever since I moved off the old PC that is.

I've "fixed" it before. NVIDIA settings. A performance mod here and there. The two weeks I spent shuffling everything between the old PC and the laptop. And the time the culprit turned out to be me overloading the poor thing's USB power, which honestly still remains an issue, but eh I've only got so many ports.

Then there's the drive. The SSD's been part of it too seems. Faulty firmware I never knew about. I still need to properly check whether it's still degrading, but if it is, I'm looking at a new SSD in the next 8 or 9 months. Which isn't cheap.

Some fixes held for a bit. Some didn't. Some never will. So I've cast Repairo again. Feels good right now, runs fine so far. Whether that spell holds, we'll see... In the meantime I'm diagnosing a memory leak, that I assume I'll also fix in a few days. I already have a suspect.

Regarding Halo 2, I'm not sure if Portmaster had anything to do with it. At the time, that seemed logical. So if you encounter any issues that might be worth disabling temporarily, but yesterday I also found that ClockSkew in appdata had a 11 minute offset delay which prevented me from logging into Halo The Masterchief Collection. Two separate issues yet nice to know if you do encounter them.

Now if a video still has a rough patch (which I'll highly doubt at this point but I remain skeptical), now you know why in greater detail. Per usual I'll edit out the worst of it where I can. Thanks for riding it out while I sort it properly though.
